Panasonic KX-P7510

Laser printers are great for small office workgroups, but they need to be fast and network-ready. And of course it doesn't hurt if you can get them at a good price, too. Panasonic's KX-P7510 is a fast printer that should fit nicely into most small-office budgets.

The KX-P7510 uses a PowerPC 603e processor and comes with 20MB of memory standard. You can increase the total memory to a maximum of 132MB, which should be more than enough for your average small-office printer. The KX-P7510 has a basic parallel port connection, but it includes a 10/100BaseT Ethernet connection, too.

Measuring 11.9 inches high x 16.8 inches wide x 17 inches deep and weighing only 37.4 pounds, the KX-P7510 isn't terribly huge by laser printer standards. The KX-P7510 has a standard 500-sheet paper tray, to which you can add a second 500-sheet tray.

With the ability to kick out a maximum of 17ppm (pages per minute), the KX-P7510 is a pretty speedy printer. It has a resolution of 600dpi (dots per inch) and supports PL6 page description language. Support for PostScript Level 2 is optional. The KX-P7510 is compatible with several major operating systems, such as Windows 9x, 2000, NT4, and Mac OS 7.5X or higher.

We found the KX-P7510 to be a very fast printer. In our first test, we measured how quickly it could print a 10-page text document. The KX-P7510 kicked out the first page in 13 seconds, and the entire document in only 46 seconds, which is pretty good. Next we had the printer print out a large Photoshop image. The quality of the image was so-so; it had some noticeable banding, but it printed in only 44 seconds.

Finally, we ran our PowerPoint test. The first page of our PowerPoint document came out in 13 seconds, and the entire document was finished in 20 seconds, which is not bad at all. The graphics in the PowerPoint image looked very good, and the text looked great.

The KX-P7510 is a solid laser printer that can get the job done in a hurry. It's a bit too pricey for the home, but it has just the right options and performance for a small office.
