Subject:  QuickTime audio

Q. When I try to play an audio sample (pronunciation of a word in a language lesson), QuickTime produces a heavy, black, horizontal line in the middle of the screen. No audio. (My audio is on.)

What's up?

Are there some settings I need to change to get this to work?

Thanks, Lyle

A.sfbay,

Thanks for this compendium of what works and what doesn't--maybe I should take up knitting or needlepoint where things don't change every time the wind changes!

A.Lyle - It's good to hear [no pun] you have audio from NT Greek, at least with IE7. Today, IE7 worked with QuickTime but not WMP. The same with Firefox 3.5.5 [XPPro] and 3.5.6 [Vista rigs] - no WMP, only QuickTime. Yesterday, WMP11 played NT Greek on all machines. Go figure. If the audio player changes tomorrow, I'll let you know.

This made me look for an NT Greek contact to discuss audio issues but none were found - no name, no USPS mailing address, no phone. Only the email instructor@ntgreek.net.

A.sfbay,

I tried this site with IE (version 7) and it played ok. It doesn't play in Firefox.

One of Mozilla's pages indicated some sites code for IE and won't work with Firefox, but I believe you have successfully played the audio from this site with Firefox.

A.sfbay - I followed this link, entered my service tag to identify which drivers I might need. They showed only one: Realtek driver for ALC888 HD Audio.

I downloaded and installed this driver--still no audio for this site.

Perhaps it's time to abandon this quest for a solution to this problem and be happy that sometimes (some sites) Quicktime works right.

Thanks,

Lyle

A.Lyle - The obvious is most often overlooked. Go here and download the latest audio drivers. Should do the trick. http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx

A.Thanks, sfbay.

I was using Firefox 3.5.4. On Mozilla's page I didn't find Firefox 3.5.6, just 3.5.5 so I got that.

Quicktime version in use here is 7.6.4.

My WAV audio association in Firefox is Quicktime 7.6.4.

I still get the same results. Since you were unable to duplicate the problem, I'm thinking there is something else wrong here at my computer setup.

A.Lyle - I have good news and bad news.
Bad news is I cannot duplicate your problem.

Good news is NT Greek audio works with
1. Firefox 3.5.6 using WMP 11 or QuickTime 7.6.4. That's with Plugins enabled and disabled. Doesn't matter, works either way. Works with IE Tabs too. Having file associations within Firefox I can flip flop between WMP and QuickTime with zero problems. Audio comes across clear and true.
2. Safari 4 using QuickTime.
3. IE 6 and 7 fails with WMP but not with QuickTime.
This includes hearing the Lesson 3 voice-over in "Learn the masculine and then use the Clik-Thru Tutor to learn the neuter."

Nothing unusual seen in Page Source or FF>Tools>Page Info either.

Lyle, are you using IE 8? If so, try switching to Firefox 3.5 or backdown to IE7. Sorry, I wish I had a better answer for you.

A.sfbay,

Thanks for your efforts on this problem.

The site where I run into this problem is:

http://www.ntgreek.net/lesson11.htm

Several places on the page there are audio buttons to hear a word or alphabet character pronounced.

By the way, I have seen this problem on other sites, so I had assumed that the problem was at my computer, not the sites providing audio clips.

Thanks,

Lyle

A.Lyle - OK, that ruled out 64 bit incompatibility and points to the online file. Can you provide a link to the audio file? I'll look it over on my rig. Have you scanned the file for malware? I ask because you set default as WMP but it insist on using QT. That shouldn't happen under normal circumstances.

A.sfbay, I got the new version 7 of QuickTime you suggested--still the same result.

The audio is from an online course (freebie) so I don't know what resources the author uses to provide the audio. (When I set the .wav default to Windows Media player, I still get the QuickTime screen with the bar.)

I must be missing something here--making some dumb mistake!

A.Lyle - You might give QT version 7 a shot as Snow Leopard runs on 64 bit.

Would also help to know the mfg and program name.

A.Thanks, sfbay.

I set the .wav to default to QuickTime--same results: black bar in the center of the screen.

Any other possibilities?

A.Lyle - "What's up?"
The file type, protocol, or extension of the "language session" may not be associated with QuickTime. Go to Control Panel>Default Programs>Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Scroll down to the extension of the "language session", click to highlite, click Change Program button, select QuickTime.
