Subject:  Bought W7 pro upgrade and my computer is W-XP pro
From:  GEORGEKRICKOVICH
Sent:  11/6/2009 6:11:08 PM
Q. I realize that I must re-format my HD to remove W-XP but.
The W7 box says "Windows Vista Upgrade". I am currently running W-XP pro. I called the MS Store and inquired about the word "upgrade" and will it do a complete install of W7 on my formatted HD. I have to get rid of W-XP as the operating system on my HD before I can install W7 on it. I questioned the lady over and over again about the word "upgrade" and that installing this W7 upgrade on a formatted HD is not technically an "upgrade". She said that it would install as a full version of W7.
Has anyone proved this before I take the long road to re-formatting my HD after backing up all my files of course?
Thanks.
George

A.Thanks to all on installing W-7 Pro over W-XP pro. I use Arconis True Image to create a complete image of my C: drive that is bootable. It's my way of "backing up" as I can't see just backing up my files and if there is a HD failure re-installing the OS and all the applications.
I just made a image of my C: the other day and changed my BIOS to boot from it and it did so I'm good to go if W-7 install fails and wipes my C: drive.

A.The trick for a "Clean" Install is toy use the custom option, do not put in product code when asked. After install you can activate it and it will then ask for product code. You see, the Upgrade disks are same as full installs. But your product code tells it that you have a upgrade. G Luck. Yes, I installed mine this way to a fully formatted hard drive with no probs.

A.The Windows 7 upgrade disk will upgrade Vista only. If you are installing it on a Windows XP machine you will choose the option of "Custom Install" from the two that are provided. The Windows installation will be wiped out and replaced by the Windows 7 so back up anything important before you start. Also make sure that your drivers for the motherboard are compatible with Windows 7.
Good luck

A.My two installations of Win7 have created a Windows.old Folder on the internal HDD. Win7 Pro installed on my Notebook over Vista Home Premium and on my wife's Desktop over Win7 Ultimate 90-day trial. I chose the full install for both.

A.A. nktower, I've heard that win7 will create a file called "old program file" on the C:drive, if there is enough space. I hope this is true otherwise I'll have to clean up a external drive to install win7.

A.It will install if it detects XP, so you do NOT want to empty the drive. However the install will wipe your drive - you do NOT do the uninstall of XP, you let the installer do it. If you want to preserve your installed appliication programs such as Office etc., the installer will do it provided that you give it an empty external hard drive of sufficient size. The installer will move everything to the external hard drive, then wipe the primary drive, install Windows 7, and then move stuff in from the external hard drive.

I do not know if it will use an empty internal hard drive for the migration.

I have not done this process but know several who have. They said that for a large system (i.e. 100GB of protrams/data) it could take the better part of a day to do the processing.
