Subject:  IE 7 Problem

Q. My old HP Pavilion 8665c is connected to my newer PC by a wired connection (Cate 5 cable). My ISP is Verizon FIOS. Recently I have been unable to open IE (7). Get a message that says Windows is having a problem and needs to close. However, I can get into both AOL and Firefox without difficulty. My AVG won't update nor will Windows Defender because both say I need a intrnet connection. I am not sure which version of IE 7 I am using because I can't open to check and I don't know an alternate method. The old PC is using XP but I can't check Windows Update either because of the connection. Does anybody have a suggested? I hope I have provided sufficient info. Thank you.

A.The browser you use should have nothing to do with updating your AVG, etc. You just need to connect to the internet. Do you have a modem that your pc is plugged into? You might try recycling your modem. Shut down your computer and then your modem and pull the power plug from the back of the computer. Pull the power cord out of the modem, too. After a few seconds plug the modem back in and let it fully reboot. All of the lights that are normally on the modem should be lit and then plug in the computer and boot it up and see if that changes anything. Good luck!

A.BobP: Appreciate that my question is still up on the Board. When I turned on PC Friday, first thing I tried to do was update AVG and Windows Defender. Neither was able to update; no connection. Same applies to AdAware. Quickly realized no IE, just Firefox & AOL. IE7 indicated problem and had to close. Then when I went back yesterday to download IE 8, no IE or Firefox. I was able to DL IE8 to my desktop from the AOL browser. I watched the DL as well as the installation and it showed successful. Since I can get into AOL, unable to understand why I can't access the other two browsers. As mentioned previously, I do not have any dialup service for either of my PCs. I'll try again to do virus/malware scans without updating if that will work. PC had not been turned on for a couple of weeks which is why I was trying to update. Thank you for your response.

A.Your question remains on the board.
Have you done any virus/malware scans? These could be causing your browser problems.

A.FascistNation: today I was unable to get into Mozilla even though I could yesterday. I can log into AOL using my broadband connection -- I do not have any dialup service. In Mozilla today the following message comes up: We're sorry FireFox has a problem and has crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts. I clicked on snd crash report and message said it was successful, but still can't open Mozilla. I don't understand why only AOL is working. Seems like it would be all or none! I did download IE8 from AOL browser and downloaded to my desktop. I then ran Install and received message that IE8 instation was successful. Still no IE. Same message about having a problem and needing to close. I checked program files and IE8 is there. I do not want to take my PC to a repair shop because of its age. If you have any other suggestions, I would be grateful. Otherwise, guess I just have to stop trying to beat a dead horse. Thanks for your efforts to set me straight. Can this question remain on the Q&A Board in case someone else has a idea to offer -- or does this close it out?

A.Thanks. I will try what you suggest. Honestly, I had not thought of using Firefox to do the upgrade to IE 8. Figured it had to be done through IE 7 which will not open. Will e-mail back to let you know how it works out. Much appreciated. I use the old PC and although it is very slow, it has worked well until now.

A.Upgrade to IE8 using Firefox, and hopefully it will resolve the issue.
