In some cases, light scanners can be on the flimsy side, but this one's sturdy—and did we mention it's really thin? It has the same 8.5-inch x 11.7-inch maximum scanning area as most flatbed scanners, but the whole scanner is only about an inch thick. Don't worry about scanning thick items, though, because the N670U's Z-Top Expansion Lid (which gets its name from the z-shaped lid hinges that fold together and lay flat when not in use) expands to scan bulkier items, such as magazines and books. Another reason we like the N670U is that it includes a stand that lets you store the scanner on its side. You can even operate the scanner this way, which is convenient if you don't have a lot of spare desk space or want to avoid a cluttered desk. The N670U has the usual USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable connection as well as three one-touch buttons in front to scan, copy, and e-mail your documents. With its 600 x 1,200 dpi (dots per inch) resolution and 48-bit color depth, the photo scans the Canon produced were comparable to our original photos, and its software bundle should be more than sufficient to handle your scanning jobs. The colors we got from the CanoScan were bright, details were sharp, and contrasts were acceptable. Our text scans looked clean with good ink coverage. The only disappointment was that our grayscale test only picked up 21 shades of gray, far fewer than our 27-shade benchmark tests for. Still, that's a minor complaint compared to the rest of the scanner's features and its stingy price. by Catherine Geistkemper CanoScan N670U $99 Canon (800) 652-2666 (516) 328-5000 http://www.usa.canon.com
