CTX Opto EzPro 585

The EzPro 585 portable LCD projector from CTX makes a fine traveling companion. Utilizing a clever design, the EzPro 585 folds up nicely into a compact package, making it perfect for toting along to any educational, small-business, or personal presentations you might have.

With a true SVGA resolution of 800 x 600 and a compressed XGA resolution of 1,024 x 768, the EzPro 585 weighs in at just 9.9 pounds. The EzPro 585 is also thoughtfully shipped in a durable, soft carrying case that provides ample room for the projector, a laptop computer, the bundled power cords, video and audio cables, the mouse, and Macintosh adapters. The projector is even easy on space requirements, with a footprint of 10.2 inches wide x 6.4 inches high x 12.5 inches deep. Out of the carrying case, the projector sets up easily, with the lens (f212 to 224mm) unfolding with just the push of a button.

We tested the EzPro 585 by connecting it to a Compaq Presario notebook with a 350MHz AMD K6-2 processor and 64MB of RAM, running Windows 98 (Win98). Although the projector's five-language users manual was on the short side, setup proved to be a simple affair. Initially, we had trouble getting the EzPro 585 to cooperate with Win98 and project an image on our screen. However, the EzPro 585's clear and concise troubleshooting documentation informed us that we needed to switch our monitor settings, which quickly remedied our problems.

The projector provides 500 ANSI lumens (the standard by which lamp brightness is measured), projects an image of 40 to 180 inches diagonally, and has a projection distance of 5 to 20 feet. In addition, the EzPro 585 uses a 330-watt metal halide lamp and has two internal speakers with 3-watt output, a built-in amplifier, and a Keystone Correction function that allows users to conveniently adjust the image up to 20 degrees without moving the projector.

When the EzPro 585's $2,995 price tag is taken into consideration, the projector's image quality is more than acceptable. It projects sharp, accurate colors, but has more difficulty with black text, which was choppy and a bit fuzzy at either resolution setting. Brightness also wasn't a problem for the EzPro 585 in our testing lab whether the room's lights were on or off.

CTX Opto bundles the EzPro 585 with an unobtrusive remote control, which includes a well-designed, built-in pointing stick to navigate the cursor on-screen using a thumb. The remote can also zoom a projection in and out, move an image up and down, control the volume and on-screen menu selections, and drag and drop content.

At $2,995, the EzPro 585 is priced more to sell than it is to impress us with its image quality. The projector might lag behind more expensive LCD portable projectors in terms of projecting sharp, focused, and bright images, but this lightweight model presents itself as a valuable companion to small businesses and educational markets.
