Compro PS-39U

The Compro PS-39U has one of the oddest designs we've seen. The camera's main body resembles a phaser gun, with the circular lens attaching to the body in a descending fashion. The camera's body then screws into a flat mount that allows the camera to swivel easily up and down, but not from side to side.

Once we connected the camera and saw the excellent images it produces, we put the camera's curious design in the back of our mind. The Compro PS-39U's CMOS sensor captures outstanding still images and video in 24-bit color, with extremely fine focus and detail. The accurate colors and sharp, clear focus the camera produces are among the best we've seen from a Web cam. Also, the camera's ability to capture wonderful black-and-white video impressed us, as did the included user-friendly SnapShot Interfaced Capturing software.

The Compro PS-39U takes still images at an impressive high resolution of 1,280 x 960 pixels and captures video at 40fps (frames per second) at 160 x 120 pixels. The camera also captures video at 25fps at 320 x 240 pixels and 6fps at 640 x 490 pixels, although video is much slower and choppier at these lower resolutions.

A shutter button is included on top of the camera for taking still images within the 8-foot cord's range. In addition, the lens has an adjustable manual focus of 10mm to infinity and an impressive automatic gain control that adjusts admirably to dark and bright lighting. Interchangeable wide angle and telephoto lenses are also available. The PS-39U bundles with Cinemail and Microsoft NetMeeting software.

The Compro PS-39U doesn't have an integrated microphone, so you'll have to dig one up yourself. The camera also disappointed us with its thin documentation, especially on the software side. Although the camera is priced somewhat high at $155, its outstanding image quality and impressive software make it worth your strong consideration.
