FujiFilm MX-2700

As a traveling partner, the MX-2700 from FujiFilm is hard to beat. At just 4 inches high x 3.1 inches wide x 1.2 inches deep, this camera is barely larger than a deck of playing cards, making it one of the smallest cameras you're likely to see on the market. Easily able to fit into a front shirt pocket, the FujiFilm MX-2700's diminutive size shouldn't fool you. This camera's features and image quality give it a considerable stature.

Although the small, boxlike size is the first thing you'll notice about the MX-2700, what impressed us most was its 2.3-million pixel CCD (charge-coupled device) and 1,800 x 1,200-pixel resolution. The camera bundles with an 8MB (megabyte) SmartMedia card and stores an impressive eight to 141 images as JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) files in three quality settings.

Our indoor and outdoor images displayed excellent detail and sharpness, although some photos were hampered by a slight darkness. Most photos were clear, but we were particularly impressed by the clarity and sharpness of our outdoor photos taken on a rainy day. Overall, the FujiFilm MX-2700 produced wonderful images, earning itself a place alongside other digital cameras we've reviewed with 2-million pixel image quality.

We were less impressed with the MX-2700's design. Because it's so small, it feels awkward holding it while framing photos. The camera has an optical viewfinder and 2-inch LCD, but because the viewfinder is in the upper-left corner of the camera, the LCD receives several fingerprints and nose impressions. In addition, the plethora of buttons on the back is initially intimidating, although the camera is fairly easy to use once you review its navigational button and mode dial.

The MX-2700 is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and features an impressive array of additional settings, including 2.5x digital zoom, four special effects settings, five manual white-balance settings, nine brightness levels, a slow synch mode for night photos, and four sharpness levels.

The FujiFilm MX-2700 is able to cram a lot of quality and features into its small frame. In addition, its above-average images, adaptability, and travel-friendly size make it a fine companion for novices and advanced users alike.
