Toshiba MEA-110 Digital Audio Player

Get big sound from a device that you can easily slide into your shirt pocket. The tiny half-inch high, 2.7-ounce Toshiba MEA-110 Digital Audio Player lets you take your digitally downloaded music, such as MP3 files, with you wherever you go.

The thin metallic-silver MEA-110 has 64MB of embedded memory that will let you play back an hour of music. The Digital Audio Player also comes with a built-in external SD Memory card slot to increase play time. Two AAA batteries will provide power when you need it. You'll want to ditch the ear buds that come with the player for some decent, comfortable headphones that will stay in place.

To play songs downloaded from your computer on the MEA-110, just insert the player's CD-ROM to load the Audio Manager software. You'll see a warning that the software will only work with Windows 98 systems and may not operate well with computers running Win98 versions upgraded from Windows 95 or 3.1. However, the player's program worked fine on our Win98 system, which was upgraded from Win95 some time ago.

With the MEA-110 plugged into your computer, you can download MP3 files and songs you've transferred to your system from an audio CD-ROM. Audio Manager lets you create play lists and organize your music by genre, artist, bit rate, or group. After downloading your music, you can use the player's two wheel buttons to access all the adjustment controls, such as volume, skip and backtrack, and forward and rewind. There are also five equalizer levels and various repeat options that you can choose from, as well as a memory feature that instantly brings you back to a specific moment in any song. A small, but extremely clear LED readout on the player lists your current adjustment selections, as well as the track number, song title, and other song-specific data.

Overall, we can't find much to complain about with the Toshiba MEA-110 Digital Audio Player. Its thin, lightweight design, useful software, simple controls, and rich sound quality make it an attractive device for any music lover. Its $350 price tag, however, make the Toshiba player rather more expensive than many other MP3 players. It's a solid device, but you may want to check out a few less expensive models before handing your money over.
