The BJC-5000 provided mixed results in terms of speed. On two tests, one printed in draft mode and another printing a large, high-resolution photo, the printer was a definite disappointment. It lagged behind several printers that cost from $30 to $60 less. On two other tests, where we printed mixtures of text and graphics using a Microsoft Word file on one and a Microsoft PowerPoint file on the other, the BJC-5000 performed comparably to other printers in its price range. We were disappointed that the dual print heads didn't provide a sizable speed boost over similarly priced printers. The BJC-5000's print quality, however, was impressive. The high-resolution color photo we printed looked great on both photo and plain paper. Some printers trying to print photos on plain paper will over-saturate the paper with ink. The BJC-5000's plain-paper printout looked almost as good as the one on photo paper. Text was sharp and crisp, looking just a step short of laser printer-quality. The printer was fairly easy to setup, and the installation process was well-documented in the accompanying setup guide. For those that have set up inkjet printers before, the dual print head configuration might be a bit confusing, but the setup guide does a good job of walking you through the process. There are some nice features besides print quality, namely the BJC-5000's ability to handle tabloid (11- by 17-inch) paper. This is by far the least expensive printer we've seen that can handle large paper sizes. Overall, the BJC-5000 is a good printer, even if it didn't live up to the hype about its dual-head design. by John Lalande Canon BJC-5000 $229 Canon Computer Systems Inc.
