Xerox WorkCentre 490cx
Impressive At Any Function
If you're searching for an all-in-one device that provides quality color prints and timesaving copying and scanning features, check out the Xerox WorkCentre 490cx. This inkjet multifunction device offers copying, scanning, faxing, and printing options for homes and small offices. The 490cx delivers some of the sharpest color printing and copying available among the market's numerous color inkjet multifunction devices.

The photo-quality color prints stem from the 490cx's high 1,200 x 1,200dpi (dots per inch) printing resolution and 300 x 600dpi color optical resolution. A highlight of this device is its ability to store up to 200 pages in fax memory, a handy feature if the unit runs out of paper and the faxes keep coming. The 490cx offers a 100-sheet paper capacity and includes a 30-page automatic document feeder at the rear of the machine.

The device measures 17.2 inches x 14.2 inches x 7.6 inches, a fairly large footprint compared to other multifunction machines we've seen, but it weighs only 14.5 pounds. The 490cx ships with software that lets your PC e-mail a scanned photo or document directly to a recipient from the machine, as well as Pagis Pro 2.0 and TextBridge PRO '98 text recognition software.

We tested the 490cx on an IBM 300XL with an Intel Pentium II 300MHz (megahertz) processor and 128MB (megabytes) of RAM (random-access memory) running Windows 98. The 490cx can connect to a PC through a USB or parallel connection, plus it works as a standalone copier. The unit delivered excellent results in all of our tests, just exceeding the manufacturer's specifications. When printing plain text files, the 490cx delivered 10 pages in just over two minutes. The high-resolution color photo took 10:27 (minutes/seconds), a normal speed for an inkjet device. The device produced smooth color renditions with no banding. (Banding is a printing flaw that creates vertical or horizontal lines running the length of the page.)

To test the unit's fax features, we sent and received faxes from another fax machine. The output from the 490cx was easy to read, but the text was lighter than a typical black-and-white print. Text also appeared lighter during our copying tests, but this was adjustable with the Lighten/Darken button on the main control panel.

With its sharp prints, attractive price of $349, and numerous features, the 490cx would be a good investment for those who want to scan and e-mail photos to relatives or use the fax and copier features for daily business.
