If you travel, or for that matter, live in a major city you long to explore in depth, you must check out Schmap. This free program works in tandem with dozens of guides to give you an interactive and useful resource.

Schmap prompts you to choose a city guide, which it will install with the Schmap program. Optionally, you can download the program alone and download individual guides or a MegaPack for Europe, the United States, or the entire world.

When you install the program and open a guide, the map for your chosen city will appear as a large icon in the upper corner, and you’ll see a tabbed interface in the main screen. Click any of these tabs to begin exploring the program features.

Click the Maps tab, and you can select one of several area and neighborhood maps to display in the main screen. From there, you can select or deselect categories of destinations, which Schmap will overlay on your chosen map. Click an item, and Schmap will zoom in on the item’s location. It will also display a picture and description.

Schmap provides an array of resource links, descriptions, and other goodies. An interface tool lets you search the Internet for more information on a topic without leaving Schmap.

Some cities’ guides are much more thorough than others, but Schmap is working to improve them. If Schmap ever offers a mobile version of this product, it will be perfect. As it stands, it’s pretty darned appealing.
