Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB

Saitek is an international company that produces a wide range of controllers and accessories for PCs and game consoles like Sony's PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The Cyborg 3D Gold is the latest in a line of Cyborg joysticks that have helped put Saitek on the map. It includes plenty of configurable buttons, an interesting-looking but exceptionally comfortable design, and has the added benefit of USB (Universal Serial Bus) compatibility for easy installation.

The long, thin trigger on the front of the Cyborg looks deceptively delicate, but we used it vigorously for some time and never had any reason to think it won't stand up to extensive use. Saitek adorns the top of the stick with three buttons that you can program to perform various functions and an eight-way hat switch that is great for selecting different first-person views in flight simulators. A series of programmable buttons on the base of the joystick make it easy to keep your favorite in-game controls close to hand. The rotating handle sets the Cyborg 3D apart from the original Cyborg, and works great as a rudder control in flight games or a turret rotation control in games like MechWarrior.

One of the first things you notice when you look at the Cyborg 3D is the bizarre-looking hand rest near the bottom of the gold stick. We haven't seen a contraption like this before, but it makes perfect sense after spending some time using the stick. It keeps your hand comfortably in place, avoiding slips during tense moments and helping stave off the fatigue that can set in during marathon gaming sessions. Thanks to the hex wrench Saitek attaches to the front of the joystick's base, you can adjust it for your hand size or remove it if you like. The Cyborg's throttle has knobs on both sides, and you can use the hex wrench to move the thumb paddle from one side to the other to suit you as well.

We like the way the Cyborg feels and responds. It has a nice loose feel but it's not loose enough to be sloppy. The throttle control is just stiff enough to make it easy to adjust by tiny increments, and the buttons all seem pretty responsive. The Cyborg 3D Gold USB has a suggested retail price of $49.95.
