Xerox WorkCentre XK50cx

Flatbed scanners have an advantage over sheetfed scanners in that they let you scan pages from books. The flatbed scanner on Xerox's WorkCentre XK50cx multifunction device ($599) has an advantage over other flatbed scanners because its lid can slide upward to accommodate thick books and other materials. Sometimes, little things such as this add up to a lot.

The XK50cx has USB (Universal Serial Bus) and parallel ports and can print, copy, fax, and scan in color. It has a 100-sheet input tray, but it also can hold as many as 30 pages in the automatic document feeder on top of its scanning platen. Its top resolutions are 2,400 x 1,200dpi (dots per inch) for printing, 600 x 600dpi for copying and scanning (4,800 x 4,800dpi enhanced scanning), and 300 x 300dpi for 33.6Kbps (kilobits per second) faxing. Replacement ink cartridges cost $42 (black) and $38 (color).

For our testing, we connected this Xerox MFD to a 667MHz Pentium III IBM PC with 192MB of RAM and Windows 98 SE. It's a fast unit in everything but photo printing, maxing out at 6.67ppm (pages per minute) in draft text. Its text and photographs on photo paper were very, very good for an MFD. Everything seemed sharp and clean, with realistic contrasts and bold colors. Its graphics were fairly nice as well although some images had a little horizontal banding.

The XK50cx comes with a small, but useful, software bundle. Pagis Pro 3.0 lets you scan images directly into your e-mail client while Textbridge Pro 9.0 uses OCR (optical character recognition) to convert scanned text pages into documents you can edit in a word processor.

The WorkCentre XK50cx comes with printed installation and users guides, along with more information on CD-ROM. Even better, it has a one-year warranty with overnight exchange. We like it, and we think you will, too.
