Acer 77e Monitor

Average test results for the Acer 77e Monitor may not jive with the company's assessment of the display as "the most bang for your buck." However, considering its reasonable price tag, the device is not a bad buy, and you could do far worse with some similarly priced 17-inch CRT displays.

With a 16.5-inch high x 16.6-inch wide x 16.7-inch footprint and a plain beige case, the 77e will not exactly dress up your desktop; it also eats up a whopping 110 watts of power when turned on. However, the display does have the imaging amenities to get the job done, including a .27mm dot pitch, 1,280 x 1,024dpi maximum resolution, and an 85Hz refresh rate at our testing resolution of 1,024 x 768dpi.

There's no documentation that arrives with the 77e, but that's OK. The display uses a regular 15-pin SVGA plug for easy computer installation, and the monitor's controls are intuitively designed and require little explanation to learn and use. The four-button OSD (on-screen display) includes Exit and Enter buttons and two arrow controls that let you adjust screen size and position, as well as settings for Pincushion, Trapezoid, Parallelogram, Moiré, Degauss, and Language. You can't lengthen the display time for the OSD menu, but it stays on for several seconds and gives you more than enough time to consider your selections.

While not great, the monitor's image quality is still satisfactory for most tasks. Text appears just a bit blurry, but readable even at smaller font sizes; high-intensity lines also bloom noticeably. On the other hand, color appears rich and vibrant, and the 77e does an excellent job of rendering a wide range of varying gray and color shades. Color registration is slightly off horizontally, and we could see noticeable moiré flickering and just a little bowing of vertical lines. Photographs looked clear and sharp with decent shades, though brighter colors appeared somewhat bleached with few details in these areas, and darker colors appeared faded. In addition, screen regulation was not very good, ruling this monitor out for serious gamers playing graphic-intensive games.

Still, with a three-year warranty, decent imaging capabilities, and a flicker-free display, the $249 Acer 77e is well suited for general computing tasks. It's not the best monitor we've ever reviewed, but it is still a solid unit suitable for the home or small office.
