Samsung ML-4600

Many people would rightfully be interested in a good laser printer that only costs $299. Samsung's ML-4600 isn't especially fast, and the quality of the prints are ok, but not great. But the price tag is compelling. If you can sacrifice a little quality and speed, the ML-4600 is a bargain.

The ML-4600 has a 66MHz RISC processor and comes with 4MB of memory, expandable to 68MB total. The printer has the usual parallel port, but it also includes a USB port, which is a nice option we'd like to see in more laser printers.

The ML-4600 doesn't require a mile of desk space. It only measures 8.8 inches high x 12.9 inches wide x 13.5 inches deep, and weighs a mere 13.7 pounds. It has a multipurpose 150-sheet paper tray, and a maximum print speed of 8ppm. Yeah, that's a bit on the slow side, but you're only shelling out $299, remember? The ML-4600 has a 1,200 x 600dpi resolution and does not include support for PostScript. It is compatible with quite a few operating systems, however, including Windows9x/2000/Me/NT 4.0, Mac 8.6 or later, and Red Hat Linux 6.0 or later.

We knew the ML-4600 wouldn't set any speed records in our testing, and we were right. The ML-4600 printed the first page of our 10-page text file in 18 seconds, which is somewhat slow. It printed the entire document in 1:27. The text was dark, as it should be, but it could have been a little sharper. Still, the text was acceptable.

In our Photoshop test, the ML-4600 cranked out the test image in1:03. There was a little bit of banding in the image, but it looked a lot better than we expected. The PowerPoint test also went well. The text and charts were pretty sharp and dark, just like they should be. The ML-4600 printed the first page of our three-page PowerPoint document in 18 seconds and finished printing the document in 35 seconds.

The ML-4600 is hardly a speedster. It chugs along pretty slowly; in fact, compared to other laser printers we've seen recently. But those laser printers will cost you twice as much. If you want a laser printer and you can live with the relatively slow print speed, the ML-4600 is a bargain.
