Xerox WorkCentre M940

If your computer already has a fax/modem, there's no need for you to spend more to get a MFD (multifunction device) with faxing capability. In this scenario, Xerox's remarkable WorkCentre M940 would represent money well spent. The M940 comes with a software package that includes faxing in the form of QuickLink III PC Fax, along with OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert scanned text pages into editable documents through TextBridge PRO.

The M940 is a 1,200 x 1,200 dpi (dots per inch) inkjet MFD topped off with a flatbed scanner. Flatbed scanners have an advantage over sheetfed scanners in that they let the user scan pages from bulky materials such as books. The M940's lid even adjusts upward an inch or more to make allowance for thick subjects. Meanwhile, the print engine uses separate ink cartridges for each color and optical ink level sensing technology. Replacement ink cartridges cost $22 for a regular, 400-page black cartridge, $30 for a 700-page black cartridge, and $12.50 for each color.

Of course, with a scanner/printer combination, color copying is the next step. The M940 can resize a copy from 25% to 400% of its original document's size in 1% increments. Its 150-sheet input tray and manual feed slot cover its paper supply.

This Xerox has USB (Universal Serial Bus) and parallel ports. We used the latter to connect to a 667MHz Pentium III IBM PC with 192MB of RAM and Windows 98 SE. First off, we'll say that the M940 produced the best copies and printed scans we've seen from an MFD for a while (hey, it's a Xerox). Its black text was even and sharp, and its color graphics were high-quality, as well. Our only complaint was that its portrait photo of a girl's face had odd flesh tones, but this was a small snag in an otherwise seamless portfolio.

The M940 has a one-year warranty with an option for overnight exchange. It's an impressive machine with a painless price.
