Minolta QMS Magicolor 6100 Desklaser

The Minolta QMS Magicolor 6100 Desklaser is a big printer for big jobs. Those working in a busy small office will appreciate the 6100's quickness, especially for longer documents.

The most striking feature of the Magicolor 6100 Desklaser is its size. Its case is an expansive 16.5 inches high x 24.2 inches wide x 21.3 inches deep, and the weight—use your legs here—is 145 pounds, making the optional printer stand more of a requirement than an option.

You'll also want to consider the two optional 500-sheet paper trays, as the standard loader holds only 250 sheets.

The 6100 uses a 133MHz processor and comes with 32MB of RAM, which is expandable to 256MB. For local Plug and Play connectivity, a parallel port is standard. The 6100 also works with a standard 10BaseT/100Base TX Ethernet connection. On the software side, the 6100 is compatible with Windows Me, Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000.

The 6100 was a snap to set up and install, and the documentation was complete. However, the networking guide was on the skimpy side—a little more information would have been helpful.

Like a slow-starting sprinter, the 6100 was sluggish out of the blocks. At the default resolution of 600dpi (dots per inch), it took 26 seconds to complete the first page of a 10-page text file. In only 25 seconds more, however, the next nine pages were completed, close to the manufacturer's claim of 24 speedy pages per minute.

A full-color high-resolution graphic took longer, but not much. At the printer's maximum resolution of 1,200 x 600dpi, it blazed through in 2:43.

The 6100's speed was great, but there were few quality complaints. Regular text output was dark and crisp. Color clip art graphics were a little washed-out, but still impressive, as were Power Point color graphs and text. On the flip side the high-resolution photo printout left something to be desired. Colors were indistinct in places and the overall tone was very dark.

The longer than normal warm-up was probably the 6100's biggest flaw. Plus, the printer also took nearly three minutes to perform after rousing it from its power save mode.

Overall though, Minolta QMS is offering a solid printer at a fair price. And if you need the speed, you won't find much better in a color laser printer.
