HP Scanjet 4400c

Whether you're a novice or experienced user, Hewlett-Packard's Scanjet 4400c is easy to use and definitely worth checking out. This sleek flatbed scanner replaces the Scanjet 4300c, weighs 6.3 pounds, and has four one-touch buttons. Three of these buttons let you scan, copy, and e-mail; the fourth button, photo reprint, lets you create photo album pages or print multiple photos on one page. The 4400c's lid is a little flimsy, but other than that, it's a sturdy scanner.

The Scanjet 4400c has a USB interface with a 1,200dpi resolution and 48-bit color depth capabilities. You can also get the optional parallel port cable. Installing the scanner was easy following the guide sheet; we didn't encounter any problems. The software bundle includes Iris OCR, ArcSoft Photo Fantasy, Trellix Web Express, eFax.com, and HP Print Creator. The scanner is user-friendly, and you can easily make adjustments, such as altering the exposure (highlights, midtones, and shadows), color, or resolution by following the guided steps or selecting Advanced Steps from the menu bar.

Scanning times were pretty good at 600dpi, ranging from 1:25 (minutes:seconds) to 3:36. Times were even longer, from 5:55 up to 14:22, at 1,200dpi. The results were better than the times, though; they often looked comparable to the originals. Colors were bright, although there seemed to be too much red overall, and bronzes had a brownish tone, but those are minor complaints. Flesh tones appeared natural, and details in texture and shading were evident. The black-and-white photo looked smooth, and it had acceptable shading, detail, and contrast. Unfortunately, it only picked up 23 shades of gray in our grayscale test, which falls short of our benchmark average of 27. Scanned text was clean with good ink coverage.

As I said, this scanner would work both for beginners and more advanced users. My complaints were minor, and they really shouldn't keep you from giving the 4400c a look. It produced quality scans, especially impressive because its street price is only $149.
