The 9100N is a duplex printer with a 200MHz processor. 64MB of RAM comes standard, but you can boost the memory to 512MB. The printer has emulations for PostScript 3, PCL 6, PDF, and HP-GL fonts. Connectivity options include parallel, USB, and Ethernet ports. The 9100N comes with one 500-sheet cassette tray and one 200-sheet multipurpose tray. It can handle bulk printing jobs if you buy the three optional 500-sheet cassette trays. Exactly how fast is the 9100N? The first page of each of our four timed tests appeared in less than 0:04 (minutes:seconds). A 10-page text file printed at a blink-and-you'll-miss-it rate of 31.8ppm (0:19). Similarly, a six-page text-and-graphics file printed in just 0:12 (29.7ppm), and a three-page PowerPoint file printed in 0:04 (26.4ppm). Even a high-resolution photograph printed in just less than 0:04 (16ppm). Print quality did suffer some in graphics files. For instance, there was some light banding in all charts and clip art. Also, grays were somewhat patterned. These flaws aren't bad, and they are only potential problems if you need to print high-resolution images, which had a tendency to appear a little bit too grainy and digital. Having said that, though, I was extremely impressed by the text, which was smooth, legible, and crisp at all font sizes and resolutions. Overall, the Minolta-QMS PagePro 9100N is a solid printer. Like any printer, it can't be all things to all people, but its incredibly fast print speeds, 11- x 17-inch paper handling, network capability, and high-quality text make it a bargain for the busy, text-driven office. by Kylee Dickey
