How To Get Rid Of AboutBlank | ||
|
AboutBlank is a variant of the hard-to-kill CoolWebSearch browser hijacker family. Your computer can become infected if you're using an older or unpatched version of Internet Explorer and you browse to a page that has the program embedded in it. Pop-up windows promising software updates or ads that promise to increase your computer's speed are frequent culprits. Security vulnerabilities in IE allow the program to install itself and change your browser's settings and system files. AboutBlank is very bad news. It sets your Internet Explorer address bar and homepage to "about:blank" while rerouting you to a domain owned by 1-se.com or to 213.159.118.226, capturing your search and address requests. If you try to change your homepage to something else, the hijacker will change it back. It may also install browser objects and other executable programs which consume system resources and slow down your Internet connection. WARNING: The following section includes step-by-step information on how to edit the Windows Registry, a large database containing system and program settings that are essential to how the OS (operating system) operates. Follow Registry-editing instructions to the letter and be sure to make a backup of your Registry before you begin. (Registry errors can render your computer inoperable if you don't have a backup.) This procedure differs depending on the OS you use. For more information on backing up and editing the Registry, see these articles: "Protect Yourself" and "Register Here." |
