Solution: Standby (also known as hibernation) is a power management mode where the computer shuts down certain components to reduce its energy consumption. In most cases, restoring power takes only a few seconds. Systems using the older APM (Advanced Power Management) have only one Standby level. ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) systems have three levels of progressively deeper standby modes. In the deepest standby mode, all components, including the processor and the system fans, are powered down. In this mode, the system uses only enough energy to preserve data saved in memory.
To get into Standby Mode or hibernation, access the Start Menu, click Control Panel and double click Power Schemes. For each scheme below the Power Schemes tab, use the drop-down menus to choose time settings to automatically put the computer into Standby and Hibernate modes. You can also set the hard drives and monitors to turn off after a set amount of time. (See image below.) To turn off Standby mode or hibernation, access the Power Schemes menu and return to your original selection.
