FAQ:
What does it mean when my hard drive starts making noise?
Answer:
All hard drives generate noise, so don't automatically assume that there's a drive problem. Even the latest hard drives will produce a faint whirring sound as the platters spin, and you'll often notice a slight clacking noise as the drive heads change position. However, those noises should be barely perceptible and are often drowned out by the system cooling fan(s). When internal drive noise becomes noticeable, the drive may be threatening to fail (even though the drive may be performing properly at the moment). Make a complete backup and plan to replace the hard drive at your earliest convenience.

Remember that properly installed hard drives don't vibrate or buzz. If you notice vibration inside the PC chassis, it usually means something's loose. For example, one or more loose bolts will allow a drive to vibrate against the chassis, and you'll hear noise. Open the PC and tighten the bolts for your hard drive and all other drives in your system.
