Error Message: "Windows cannot use the display settings you chose." The reader who sent this message set her monitor at 800 x 600 resolution and uses only 256 colors. These settings are low compared to most PCs, which generally are set at 1,024 x 768 or higher and use millions of colors, but the system still should work without generating an error. It's likely a program forced the Display Control to load each time Windows boots, and there's a simple solution that doesn't require removing the program if you're using Windows 9x, as the reader is. Click OK to bypass the error message, right-click the Desktop, and select Properties. From the Settings tab, click the Advanced button and the General tab. Look for Show Settings Icon On Task Bar and uncheck the box next to it. Click Apply and OK and the Display Control program won't run each time you load Windows.

Translation: An annoying message pops up every time a reader boots Windows. It never seems to damage anything, but she'd like to make it go away.

Solution: With display errors, such as Windows not using the settings you established, or slowed video performance, blame your video drivers. Check the manufacturer's Web site regularly and download and install the video card updates. Keep the new drivers handy and reinstall them when you have another display-related error. You must manually adjust the display settings, such as resolution and color depth, each time you add or reinstall new drivers. |
