How To Fix This ErrorWe Invite You To Browse SmartComputing.com!

Error Message:
"Msgsrv32 is not responding."
Translation:
I keep getting an error, or illegal operation, message saying Msgsrv32 is not responding, and it locks up my PC. Can you please tell me what this is?
Solution:
Msgsrv32 is short for 32-bit Message Server, which is a utility Windows 95/98 uses to track a variety of files and drivers. Because Msgsrv32 is the program that loads and disables drivers when Windows is booted, hardware is enabled, and Windows shuts down, many errors seem to be the fault of Msgsrv32. In fact, the errors are the result of malfunctioning hardware or outdated and incompatible drivers.

If your computer reports an Msgsrv32.exe-related error and subsequently locks up, Microsoft Technical Support says screen saver software usually is to blame. Right-click your Desktop, select Properties, and then click the Screen Saver tab. Use the drop-down list and click [None] before clicking Apply to make the change permanent.

If the Msgsrv32.exe-related error message pops up each time you exit Windows, any of a number of hardware errors could be to blame, but usually Windows' built-in power management utilities are at fault. First, try disabling power management; click Start, Settings, and Control Panel and double-click Power Management. The options differ depending on the type of computer you have, desktop or notebook, and whether its hardware supports power management, so you may need to refer to Windows' help files to determine how to turn off power management. Generally, setting all of the drop-down boxes in the Power Schemes tab to Never will do the trick. Don't forget to click Apply when you are finished and reboot your computer.

A related error reads "MSGSRV32 .EXE Caused a General Protection Fault in CM8330SB.DRV." This error is common because it pertains to audio cards that use C-Media Electronics' C-Media CMI8330 chip. This chip is integrated in a lot of motherboards to provide built-in audio playback capabilities; it's also used in many sound cards and some modems. If you bought your PC in the last few years and haven't added a new sound card, chances are good your system is equipped with a CMI8330 chip.

The error message itself refers to the driver software used to let the audio chip communicate with the rest of your computer. The best way to rid your PC of the error is to upgrade the driver to its latest version. Find out what company makes your audio hardware, go to its Web site, and download the new drivers. Sometimes you must uninstall old drivers before applying the new ones. You may also need to perform other advanced procedures, so read the installation instructions carefully. If those fixes don't work and you use a modem, update your modem drivers to the latest version.

Finally, C-Media Electronics maintains a database of the latest drivers for the CMI8330 chip at its Web site (www.cmedia.com.tw; don't forget to type the .tw at the end, or you'll go to the wrong Web site). Click the Technical Support link on the left and then the Drivers Update link. Find the appropriate chip (the one that matches the number that appeared in the error message) and make sure you select the right OS (operating system) from the list that appears to download the drivers. You'll also find links with installation instructions. Note this is a last resort; these OEM (original equipment manufacturer) drivers are not supported by your sound card manufacturer and may make it difficult to get technical support if something goes wrong. Always call the technical support number for your audio card or modem manufacturer before installing OEM drivers.
